The Product
A nail consists of a wire rod shaft with a formed head on the one side and a sharp point on the other.
Preparing The Raw Material
The coil of wire rod is taken from the coil and is pulled into a straight line.
The Wire Size
After descaling the wire, it is drawn through the wire draw machine. This machine draws the wire to the correct wire size in accordance with
the specification of the nail you want to manufacture. This process is done
The Dies
Dies are found inside the wire draw machine that sizes the wire to the correct size. A die is a tungsten bush with a hole in the middle to resize the wire.
Nail Production
The wire is fed into the nail making machine. The wire is gripped by a pair of gripper dies. While the gripper dies hold the wire in
place, the free end of the wire is struck by a mechanical hammer, which forms the head of the nail.
Finishing Touches
The nails are put into a tumbler, the lid is then exchanged with a strainer and saw dust is added. The nails then tumble for twenty minutes polished nails as a result.
Packaging
A conveyer belt feeds the nails from the bin to the weighing section.
Packaging
The packet is then labeled.

The Raw Material
The raw material, namely wire rod must meet certain standards eg. the strength and hardness.
The wire is then pulled through a descaler, taking off the mill scale.
by drawing the wire of a bigger diameter through a die with a smaller diameter, and is repeated untill the
desired size is achieved. The drawn wire is collected on a dolly on the
end of the wire draw machine.
The Maintenance
Dies wear. This effects the size of the wire being drawn, and requires resizing. The dies are then measured and drilled to a
bigger size. After the drilling, the dies are smoothly sanded and polished. The inside of the die must be very smooth, to prevent engraving marks on the wire.
A set of shaped cutters
strike the other end of the wire. This cutter forms the point of the nail and at the same time cut the nail from the rest of the
wire. The gripper dies release and feed the wire forward for the next nail. The formed nails are then collected in bins.
After the cleaning process, the nails are taken to be packed.
Lastly the carton is closed and ready for despatch.
